Lake Manasa Sarovar Hindi Tibetan, Mapham Yutso) is a fresh-water lake in Tibet 2,000 km from Lhasa. It is the highest freshwater lake in the world. To the west of Lake Manasarovar is Lake Rakshastal and towards the north is Mount Kailash, known in Tibetan as Khang Rinpoche.
The sight of a huge lake with a reflection of snow-capped mountains in its lucid waters is jaw dropping. Be prepared for a feast for the eyes. Manasarovar Lake lies at 4,556 m above mean sea level. It is relatively round in shape and its circumference is 88 km, depth is 90 m and it occupies a total area of 320 square kilometres.
Cultural significance
Like Mount Kailash, Lake Manasarovar is a place of pilgrimage, attracting religious people from India, Tibet and the neighboring countries. Bathing in the lake and drinking its water is believed to cleanse all sins. Pilgrimage tours are organised regularly, especially from India, the most famous of which is the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, which takes place every year. Pilgrims come to take ceremonial bathes in the cleansing waters of the lake.
According to Hindu legend, the lake was first created in the mind of the Lord Brahma. Hence, in Sanskrit it is called Manasarovar, which is a combination of the words Manas (mind) and Sarovar (lake). The lake, in Hindu mythology, is also supposed to be the summer abode of swans, which are considered to be judicious and sacred birds. It is also believed the Devas (Gods) descend to bathe in the lake between 3 and 5 am. This time of the day is known as Brahma Muhurta (moment). Buddhists also associate the lake to the legendary lake known as Anavatapta in Sanskrit and Anotatta in Pali, where Queen Maya is believed to have conceived Buddha. The lake has a few beautiful monasteries on its shores. The most notable of which is the ancient Chiu Gompa Monastery, which has been built right onto a steep hill. It looks as if it has been carved right out of the rock. The Jains and the Bonpas of Tibet equally revere this spot with great enthusiasm.
Note: Journey of a lifetime, a holy Pilgrimage to Kailash Manasarovar plan and process for the Tibet / China visa and Military permit takes time to acquire so you are advised to book the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra package at least 4 months in advance.

As part of the Holy Yatra, our sightseeing will be in the holy places in Kathmandu. After breakfast, our guide will pick you up from the hotel and take you to the Swayambhunath Stupa, also called the Monkey Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the religious pilgrimages for both Hindus and Buddhists. It is situated on the west side of Kathmandu on top of the hill with 365 steps that take you to the giant dome-shaped stupa. You will have a beautiful bird eye view of Kathmandu from this sacred place and it is one of the viewpoints in Kathmandu. After, strolling around the stupa and clicking some memories we then travel to Budhanilkantha.
Budhanilkantha is dedicated to the Hindu Lord Vishnu and is one of the most sacred and important temples for Hindus. You will get to see the reclining long statue of Lord Vishnu in the pond. The most interesting thing (not known by many people) about this temple is the oldest belief which says the King (now former) of Nepal should not visit this temple, as the King is believed to be the reincarnation of Lord Vishnu. This temple is believed to be from the 5th century. We then drive to one of the Hindu holy sites, Pashupatinath Temple.
Pashupatinath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the sacred sites for Hindus. This temple is situated on the bank of the holy Bagmati River where you will witness the Hindu Cremation. Non-Hindus are not allowed to enter the temple and worship but one can stroll around the temple as it has covered a wide area where you will find numerous other temples and lots of spots to stop by and interact with. We will spend some time here and then we will drive to Nagarkot, a beautiful hill station above Kathmandu. It is a beautiful view point and also helps us to acclimatize.

Early in the morning, we will drive around 58 km and reach the Tarboche. We then meet our porters and prepare ourselves for the Parikrama or Khora of holy Kailash Parvat – called Gang or Kang Rinpoche in Tibetan language. Kailash Yatra Parikarma starts from Yama Dwar at Tharboche.
From Yama Dwar, we will walk for around 6 to 7 hours to reach Diraphuk the north face of Holy Mt.Kailash.
During this Kailash Parikrama yatra, we get a close view of Mount Kailash. Once we reach Diraphuk we can view the beautiful north face of Mount Kailash.
About Kailash Parikrama :
Almost Everyone comes to make Kailash Khora meaning circumulation of Hoy Mt. Kailash going through the highest pass Dolma La (5,645m). Although local Tibetan people make Kailash Khora in a single day, it takes three days for us and the total walk is about 52-kilometer but since we can drive a bit both ways of starting and ending of Parikrama now it is a total of 38 KM we have to walk in 3 days. This Parikrama is called the outer Khora of Kailash.
But people who are not able to make the whole Parikrama for some reason have the option to go up to the North face of Kailash, do some puja, and back to Darchen and wait for group members to finish. We have specially added one more day in North Face to touch the Kailash which is called “Kailash Charan sparsa “a special moment in life. Not every company does it.
Tharboche and Diraphuk a well-known holy places for organizing events during festivals. They organize a grand event during the Saga Dawa Festival. If we are lucky and reach during the festival time, then we get to explore more about the culture and traditions of the local communities.

Kailash Charan Spash walk – touching feet of Kailash Parvat:
Today we do a sacred walk from Derapuk monastery to the feet of Kailash Parvat on the north face side of the mountain, a total of about 7 km distance. We all will try to reach to the base of Mt. Kailash Parvat – the Charan – or touch the feet of Mt. Kailash. It is a heavenly beautiful walk through a bank of milky water and snowfall from the top of Kailash mountain, it may feel a bit heavy due to the altitude. We will walk slowly and drink lots of water. We can do some meditation and Puja there as well. The Charan sparse trek in Kailash is also considered as part of Inner Parikarama.
We will be seeking blessing from Lord Shiva at this beautiful pilgrimage, expectation of positive energy. Kailash parvat is axis of the Mundi and Ganges flowing from Shiva’s matted hair ( Jatta ). By touching the miracle feet of Mount Kailash and the Ganges axis people get moksha – salvation, a rebirth. It is believed that the Ganges is the water that flows from the melted snow of Kailash and interestingly enough 4 of the major river in Asia Indus, Sutlej, Brahmaputra, and Karnali originated within a 50 KM radius of Kailash mountain. That is why May be Kailash is known as Sumeru Parvat or the center of the earth.
5 /6 hours 5400 meter LodgeB, L, D walk
We will wake you early in the morning to witness the Golden Kailash during the time of sunrise. As the first sunlight kisses the summit of Mount Kailash, it turns golden, and that view is awesome.
After breakfast and the second day of Kailash Kora starts. We will walk around 6-7 hrs. to reach the Zuthulphuk. The Kailash Parikrama yatra of today is the most difficult and we will be walking around 22km.
During the yatra, we will ascend towards the Drolma La pass, the highest point (5680m) of the whole Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. Before reaching the Drolma La Pass, there is a site where Milarepa and Shiva Tsal’s footprints can be seen. Once we reach the Pass, we will pray, the pass is decorated with prayer flags. From Dolma La Pass we will be descending, On the way, we will see Gauri Kund or Parvati Taal , and we will ask our Sherpa to get some holy Jal from here. Then we will continue our journey to Zuthulphuk. Once we reach there, we may visit the monastery there. It is rewarding but a long walk today.

Is there a temple in Kailash Manasarovar area? where people do Puja in Kailash?
There is no Temple at Kailash Mansarovar. The main crown Jwel is Kailash parvat which is known as Sumeru Parvat which everyone worships or prays too. The Kailash parvat itself is Maha shiva Lingam. At Manasarovar, people take holy baths and do Puja or havan at the Bank of the Lake. At the North face Diraphuk, and at Dolma la pilgrimage do some Puja, worship or burn lamp or incense. At Shivastal and also at Tharboche ( Yama Dwar) people leave old clothes or nails or hair believing that they get rebirth or new life. It is a very holy land itself and most of the people say that they saw Lord Shiva, Hanuman, Shesnaag, Parvati, or Apsara there. It all depends on your belief and imagination. There are holy caves around Kailash Mansarovar where many gurus, masters, and saints have meditated in the past. You can practice some Meditation there as well.
There is no Temple to worship in Kailash manasarovar area. But it is very holy land itself and four of the major rivers Indus river, Bramhaputra river, karnali river and Sutlej river are orginate around Kailash Mansarovar area.
The advertised helicopter tour to Kailash is quite misleading as there is no permission to fly a Helicopter in Tibet / China at Kailash region due to security. So the Kailash helicopter tour takes you to the Nepal / Tibet border town of Hilsa and from there, people take a Jeep or bus to Mansarovar and complete the Kailash Mansarovar tour and back to Hilsa and there take a helicopter and back to Simikot Nepalgunj and then to Kathmandu. So no helicopter goes to Kailash and we don’t recommend helicopter tours due to 3 reasons. Reason no. 1 is it is going too high too quickly so you may get sick. Reason no. 2 is due to bad weather lot of times the helicopter flights are canceled or delayed and you may end up spending more time and money, at the same time disappointed. Reason no. 3 is you will be spending more money. The best we always suggest is 15 15-day Kailash Overland tour from Kathmandu.

The first day from Tharboche ( Yama Dwar) to Diraphuk the north face of Kailash walk is about 10 Km total which is not so hard and it is about 6 to 8 hours of walk.
The 2nd day of Parikrama to Shivastal and to Dolma la is the hardest and longest one all the way to Zutholphuk it is a total of about 18 KM and it takes about 10 to 12 hours max. We start quite early and it is a full day’s walk slowly.

Since this pilgrimage is nothing short of an expedition, it places. Many uncommon demands and situations. Awareness to these problems is essential to complete the voyage successfully with confidence.
Once the voyage commences the panoramic Himalaya and Tibet cocoon the pilgrimage in their effulgence and they drift beyond the reach of a conventional world. Deep silence and eerie expansiveness rule the atmosphere. A resourceful pilgrimage however would enjoy his every step - planning is the key. The broad guidelines appended here may help you. However each one must organize according to individual requirements and preferences.
General Health: The high altitude Tibetan terrain is dry, cold and windy.
Diurnal variations are large. Nights are cold and windy.Heavy snow falls; torrential rains and strong icy winds are common features - any time. Flooding rivers and landslides are frequent. The altitude averages above 3500 meters. The route covers much high altitude passes.
Oxygen is less at higher altitudes. The inclement weather and high altitude induces certain illness generally not encountered over the plains (Mountain Sickness). Headache, nausea, lassitude, lethargy, breathlessness, general uneasiness (malaise), high irritability, light loss of balance, disorientation, incoherence and insomnia are a few. It is common to all irrespective of the age, sex and physical fitness. Gradual acclimatization is the best answer. Tranquilizers, sleeping doses and strong antibiotics must be avoided. Descending to lower altitude is the best but this may not be possible always. REST is the best alternative. Some of the symptoms indicate that the body mechanism is re-adjusting to new environments. Therefore the golden rule is to deliberately slow down all activities
(Chant a prayer or visualize everything around to suit your pleasant thoughts. Or put on the earphones and listen to your favorite music, bhajans, chanting etc. Scan the scenario with binoculars. Resort to photography.)
Expedition experts advise that beyond 3500 meters ascent or climbing must be restricted to 300 to 400 meters at a stretch. Most people, however they say would experience minimum symptoms, if given longer time to ascend. This must be borne in mind during Parikrama around Kailash.
Be careful not to catch a cold. It is better to be over-clothed than under protected. Enroute, avoid taking a bath or drinking water from lakes, streams or rivers as your system is not conditioned for this. Since the dry cold wind tends to make the nose dry (bleeding sometime) keep your nose smooth by applying Vaseline. Keep your feet dry - never let it get wet. Keep your boots / ked inside tents to keep them dry. Wearing cotton and wool socks in combination would be the best. Face, feet and hands must be well protected.
Consult your DOCTOR to assess the state of your health to function safely within your limitations. Learn the DO’S and the Don't from his advice. In addition to the personal prescriptions by your physician, a First Aid Kit is essential for the travel. Request your Doctor to prescribe effective medicines to cover the following:
- Fever, Body Joint Paints, Muscle Pills
- Constipation, Chest Congestions, Stiffness, Acidity, Cold & Cough, Sore Throat
- Headache, Stomach Cramps, Loose Motion, Sore Eyes, Sneezing, Dysentery
- Nose blocks, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Swelling, Indigestion
You may never use any of these medicines but some one in the group may require it. Protect yourself against dust and direct sunshine and Dust during the long stretches of driving. In addition to the medicines, your First Aid Kit must contain the following:
- Vaseline, Toilet Papers, Cotton, Bandage Roll, Nose Inhalers, Dust Cover (Surgeon’s Mask)
- Cologne, Facial Tissues, Rubber Bands, Chapstick, Stomach Cramps, Loose Motion
- Cough Drops, Body Lotion / Mustard Oil, Vicks, Eye Masks, Band Aid, Mouth Fresheners
- Dettol /Listerine (antiseptic), Candle & Lighter, Dark Sunglasses, Small Plastic Bags, Ear Muffs
One should carry glucose-based items (Mints, toffees, mini chocolates bars for periodical consumption at high altitude for energy). Multi-vitamin and Vitamin C tablets are required for daily consumption as a routine. It is preferable to avoid shaving as any cut or bruise may not heal quickly and may irritate with nagging discomfort.
Never rush into things. Walk slowly and firmly. Guard yourself from slipping or falling to prevent fractures, sprains and muscle pulls. The uneven ground, steep slopes and slushy banks are full of potholes. Do not combine walking and sight seeing together. Inspect your track in front and trek slowly. Listen to your guide or the one with experience. Never leave the Group. Be in the Group. Do not leave anyone behind unless escorted.
Make a separate pouch for the First Aid kit with a list of medicines and their appropriate usages.

While proceeding downwards from Dolma - La (Dolma Pass), a steep descent will lead you to Gauri Kund at 5608 m. Some call it the ‘Lake of compassion’. In the religious book Shiva Purana, this is the setting for the legend of Hindu goddess Parvati and how Ganesh (Parvati’s son) acquired his elephant head while bathing in the emerald waters of
the lake. Parvati fashioned an image of Ganesh from the
soap suds on her body, breathed life into it and placed it
at the entrance of her home to prevent anyone entering.
Lord Shiva happened to return at this point of time and
was stopped by Ganesha. Indignant at this affront, an
angry Shiva cut off the boy's head. Parvati was inconsolable and insisted that the boy be brought back to life. Helpless, Shiva took the head of a wandering elephant and placed it on the body. Life was restored and Parvati had her son back.
Mt. Kailash is formidable. But in that region there are other majestic peaks that can take your breath away. One such mountain is the Kinnaur Kailash (locally known as ‘Kinner’ Kailash). Located in the scenic Kinnaur district of the Indian state Himachal Pradesh, it boasts of a height of 6050 meters and is considered sacred by both Hindu and Buddhist Kinnauris. This mountain is sometimes confused with the Mount Kailash in Tibet. The Kinnaur Kailash Range borders the district of Kinnaur in the south and is dominated by the Kinnaur Kailash (elevation- 6349m) and Jonkarden (elevation- 6473m) peaks. The pass accessible on the trek is the Charang La at an altitude of 5300m..
This extraordinary journey takes you to Tibet’s mythical Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar and then through the hidden Humla valley in Nepal’s westernmost Tibetan frontier. Starting from Kathmandu we travel overland west along the powerful Zangpo River and over secluded high passes to reach Mt. Kailash. Hindus, Buddhist, Jains and Bonpos, who believe it to be the centre of the universe, revere this majestic mountain. Once there we will make the ‘kora’ (holy-circuit) trek of the mountain, sharing the trail with many other pilgrims that head for Kailash during summer. Afterwards we will camp by the banks of lake Manasar
ovar and then head south to cross the Tibet-Nepal border into Humla. Once over the Nara Lagna pass we get ‘over the hump’ and south of the main Hima
layan range to trek down to the Karnali River, through alpine meadows, ancient villages and forested valleys culminating in a flight from Simikot to Nepalgunj in the Nepal’s Terai lowland. This exclusive journey is made for travellers in search of a cultural and spiritual odyssey amidst mountain splendour.
And though this trip involves rigorous overland driving, trekking and camping, through the remote and wild western Tibet and Nepal, you need not be worried about comfort and safety. You will be reaching altitudes between 2,745m / 9,000ft and 4,880m / 16,000ft and hiking to a maximum of 5548m / 18,200ft. It is a fully sustained trip with all necessary camping equipment and meals, led by a qualified guide. We will be using Japanese 4-WD SUVs backed by a truck carrying supplies and equipment. During trekking, all equipment and luggage will be carried by porters. You would carry daypack only and would be allowed to walk at an easy pace.
BEST SEASON: May to October.
After you have measured and felt Kinnaur Kailash your eyes would be thirsting for more. And in fact, there are more! Adi Kailash is an ancient holy place in the Himalayan Range, similar to Mount Kailash in Tibet. The beauty of the peak lies in its remote location. The best way to see it is to trek and trekking to Adi Kailash in the Himalayan ranges of Kumaun Region near the Indo Tibetan Border in district Pithoragarh, is an experience in itself.
Up to Gunji the route is the same. One walks 14 km, first to the left of Kuti and then right, to reach Jollingkong (4572 m). The river Kuti and its bridge will perhaps may be under a thick blanket of snow. And if they are then you can consider yourself lucky. The thick blanket of snow makes it look magical.
Jonglingkong is called Chhota Kailash (small Kailash) (6191 m) while its relatively small but beautiful lake is called Parvati Tal. The reflection of the peak in the lake will leave you spellbound. There is a temple near the lake, which is sometimes visited by swan-like birds. A little distance from here the remains of a dry lake will leave you mystified. Along the river Kuti are two passes - Lampia Dhura and Mangsa Dhura - leading to Tibet.
The ITBP and SPF personnel will tell whether one can cross the Sinla pass to reach Bedang. If this is not possible one will have to return. If there is little or no snow, one should set out early in the morning to cross the pass. The route to Sinla pass is under a heavy blanket of snow. One can see the Chhota Kailash peak constantly from there.
Gods stay in many places including our hearts. Shrikhand Mahadev is one such place. A place of pilgrimage for Hindus, Shrikhand Mahadev is considered to be another abode of Lord Shiva. Its peak is 5155 metres high. So it lures climbers as well as religious devotees. To reach to this place one has to reach Jaon village of Nirmand. The Shrikhand peak is visible from the eastern side of the village. And according to the locals there is site to see a miracle here. There is a Shivalinga here. All round the year the snow falls thick and fast here, but it does not cover the Shivalinga and melts to its bottom.
And moreover Shrikhand Mahadev is a part of the Great Himalaya National Park where the thick mountain forests and the high altitude meadows are protected and hence can blossom into perfection. The long-established villages along the way are far from the roads and have an equally preserved and pristine way of Himalayan life in the mountains. Here architecture, dress and custom haven’t changed for many generations.
